Video and Match Report: Tuggeranong Vikings (The Viqueens) v Uni-Norths Owls, ACT Women's Grand Final, 2010

The video above shows the tries from our convincing grand final victory over Unis. It should be noted that the try at 1:10 (or thereabouts) was called back because of an infringement (umm, mine) about 60 seconds earlier. A late tackle I was committed to. Alas and alack.

Our manager asked me to write the match report for the Vikings website. It hasn’t been posted there yet, so I’ll stick it here for the time being.

Viqueens dominate to take the 2010 ACT Women’s Premiership

The Viqueens outclassed the Uni-Norths Owls in the ACT Women’s Grand Final, taking the match 31 – 0.

In a composed and clinical performance, the Tuggeranong lasses gave Coaches Reedy (“31 what? 31 blot!”) and John some pay, playing the game on their feet and moving the ball.

Uni-Norths came out hard in the opening 20 minutes, with some tough running from the forwards, enterprising play from the halves and tenacious defence.

Composed and sustained pressure from the Viqueens – in both attack and defence – soon proved telling, however, with centre Nikki Ayers crossing for the first 5-pointer and making a difficult conversion to put the Red-and-Whites 7 points ahead.

Wallaroos Alex Hargreaves and Kristy Giteau made plenty of inroads through the midfield, with Kim Wilson, Nikki Ayers and Shellie Milward continuing the domination with further busts. Kristy, Shellie and Bec Maher all crossed the stripe, with Nikki picking up a second try.

Flyhalf Carly Hill had an outstanding match, taking good options in attack and carrying the ball to the line very well. Her defence was first class in shutting down the Owls flyhalf, who on occasion looked dangerous.

Captain Pip Butt rightly stated that the Viqueens dominated across the pitch, with each player performing their role in a superior fashion to their opposite number. She cited a strong defensive effort, and praised the big hits put on by both forwards and backs.

The Owls didn’t manage a single line-break in the match, and surrendered possession regularly to some determined Viqueens poachers.

Manager Kathryn Dolan was more than pleased with the Grand Final victory for her birthday.
