Player Stats: ACT v Sydney, 2010 Women's National Championships

So, what killed us? As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, one of ACT’s strengths was continuity: we could keep it tight then swing it from one side of the field to the other, make a break, swing it the other way and so on and so forth until we scored. And this is what the leadup to Sharni’s try – our only try for this match – looked like. And we did have other periods of continuity where we threatened… but, ultimately, we made uncharacteristic errors which cost us.
This is reflected in our error stats. We made 16 errors in the match, or roughly one every 4 minutes.
The other dimension of the game where we shot ourselves in the collective foot was discipline. In the game, we conceded 10 penalties and 3 free kicks (I think – I didn’t keep a record of set piece infringements unless they could be attributed to a particular player). We lost the game by one point, and conceded two penalty goals. Our most experienced player was responsible for 5 of the team’s penalties.

To the individual stuff. I had the highest overall workrate, made the most tackles and hit the most attacking and defensive rucks. I’ll admit, though, that I topped the tackle count on a technicality: Carly Hill, who made 10 tackles, kinda ankle-tapped someone but wasn’t in contact with the fallen player, so it didn’t count. Check it out in the video above. So, it’s really tied up between me and Carly on 11.
As for attacking stats, Alex Hargreaves had the most ball carries (10) and the most metres gained (117m). A pretty stellar effort. Kristy Giteau was runner up there, with 7 carries for 102m. And, of course, Sharni Williams scored our one and only try.
In my opinion, Carly Hill, our flyhalf, had a great game. Yes, she’s a great tackler, but importantly, she took some good options in attack and I think the backline really looked the goods in the second half when the ball was kept under control. That said, when the ball was lost out, it was spilled out wide and there’s not much Carly could have done about that. Carly is a very composed player who has a big future in the 10 jersey.
